Thirst Under the Tigray Sun: A Story of Resilience and Relief

Imagine this: a relentless sun beating down on parched earth. Thirteen-year-old Hertig Birhane, a cowboy at heart, grazes his family’s crops near the Alendiya Water Point in Emba Sineyti Woreda, Mereto Tabia. Alendiya, located within Tabia May Nebri, is a place where the cost of water can sometimes surpass the cost of a meal.

“This area is very hot,” Hertig explains. “It is impossible to stay for very long without water. Sometimes the cost of a meal is less than that of water. I frequently drink clean and safe water from the water point during my stay here. It’s the cleanest and safest water I’ve ever drunk.

For Hertig, the Alendiya Water Point, owned by his parents, is a lifeline in this arid landscape. “The heat here is unforgiving,” he explains. “Without water, it’s impossible to stay out for long.”

That’s where organizations like REST come in. We understand the transformative power of clean, safe water. Every sip Hertig takes from the Alendiya Water Point is a testament to our mission: ensuring the well-being of individuals and transforming lives, one community at a time.
