Successfully Completes Spate Irrigation Project

The Relief Society of Tigray (REST) is proud to announce the successful completion and handover of a new spate irrigation project in Enderta wereda, Metkel, Tigray. This initiative, generously funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), empowers 712 local farmers with improved irrigation capabilities.

The project utilizes a sustainable approach, capturing floodwater and diverting it to irrigate a total of 75 hectares of land. This innovative solution not only mitigates the potential for flooding but also provides farmers with a reliable source of water for their crops. The high-quality construction, meticulously overseen by REST, ensures the project’s longevity and effectiveness.

By providing access to irrigation, this project is expected to significantly increase agricultural production in the region. This translates to improved food security, increased incomes for farmers, and a more robust local economy. Improved agricultural practices fostered by the project can also lead to more sustainable land management and environmental benefits.

REST extends its gratitude to IFAD for their crucial financial support, enabling this impactful project. We also acknowledge the Tigray Water and Energy Bureau for their dedicated oversight throughout the construction phase. This successful collaboration demonstrates the power of working together to empower communities and promote sustainable development in Tigray.

This project represents another significant milestone in REST’s ongoing commitment to supporting Tigray’s agricultural sector. We are confident that the improved irrigation capabilities provided by this project will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of the 712 beneficiary farmers and the wider community for years to come.
